Colorado is a tough climate to garden in.

  •  Bluegrass Lawns… Friend or Foe ?
With proper preparation, a blue grass lawn can be an asset. Poorly installed, it is a time and money pit. Proper installation will include organic material soil amendments and a well designed irrigation system. Site selection is also critical for success with bluegrass. Slopes, windy exposures and the small strips next to sidewalks are hard to irrigate. That leads to wasted water and poor quality turf. Consider alternate plants or landscape features in these areas. Also, consider how much time you really want to spend mowing, edging, fertilizing, etc. If the only time you spend with your turf area is work, is that a benefit to you?

  •  Many Plants Do THRIVE Here :
Trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses, perennials, wildflowers, the list goes on and on. Healthy trees can add thousands of dollars of value to your home. Shrubs and wild flowers will attract song birds and butterflies. Grasses and perennials will give your landscape colour and texture year round. The key is proper selection. The wrong plant in the wrong place will only cause extra work and frustration.  The right plant is a lifelong asset.

  •  More Than Just a Pretty Plant :
Edibles in the landscape isn’t a new idea, just a good one. Integrating fruits and veggies into your landscape can be as simple as planting a few herbs. Raised beds dedicated to a salad garden can be productive and beautiful. As with other aspects of landscape gardening, planning and preparation are the keys to the success and satisfaction of growing your own food.

January is the month for pruning and planning. Prune most plants when dormant for health and vigor. Water during dry spells.

February is when spring begins, start cleaning up perennial beds. It’s a good time to top-dress mulch beds.

March can be a weather adventure. Trim down those ornamental grasses. Apply pre-emergents for weed control. Plant pansies and spinach and lettuce.

April usually means irrigation start up. Grass is growing, it would like some slow release fertilizer, aeration is good now.

May is my busiest month, because no one followed directions in the last four months.  Plant the rest of your garden now

June  water turf deeply, two to three times a week. Pick big bouquets of iris and take them in the house.

July is a good time to prune the maple trees, so they won’t “bleed.” Turf  likes to be mowed  3 inches high this time of year, to help resist drought stress. Check irrigation for proper adjustment.

August is still hot, but the fresh veggies are great. It’s a good time to enjoy a back yard patio.

September, and it’s time to aerate and fertilize the turf again. It’s a great time to plant trees and shrubs, they are on sale.

October brings spring bulb planting time. Sprinkle the ground generously with chili powder to keep the squirrels away. Shut down irrigation before the pipes freeze.

November, clean up time. Recycle leaves at Rocky Top Resources, Saturday is Care and Share day. Free drop off with food donation.

December is a great time to prune shrubs and trees.  Feed the birds.
